Why Homeowners Google You Before They Call You

Websites4 min read

There is a step between a referral and a phone call that most owners never see. Your name gets handed over the fence or dropped in a neighborhood group, and the very next thing that happens is a search. Not a call. A search.

That search is not the homeowner being difficult. It is them doing the one thing they can do to lower the risk of handing a stranger thousands of dollars and a key to their house. They are looking for a reason to feel safe, and they will take the first one they find.

What they are actually checking

They are not evaluating your design taste. They are running a very short checklist, mostly without noticing they are doing it:

  • Is this a real business, or one guy who might disappear?
  • Do they work in my town, on my kind of house?
  • Has anyone else paid them and been glad about it?
  • Can I reach them without filling out a form and waiting?

Every one of those is answerable in about ten words. The problem is that most contractor sites answer none of them above the fold, and instead lead with a stock photo and the phrase 'Quality Craftsmanship Since 1998.'

A referral gets you looked up. Your site decides whether you get called.

The part that costs you money

When this goes wrong, nothing happens. That is the whole trap. Nobody emails you to say your site made them nervous. There is no lost-bid notification. The phone simply rings less than it should, and you write it off as a slow month or a cheap competitor.

Meanwhile the crew down the road with worse finish work and a clean, current site is taking calls from people who were originally referred to you. That is not a marketing problem. That is your reputation being spent on someone else's behalf.

What to do this week

Pull up your own site on your phone, the way a homeowner would. Give it three seconds. If you cannot tell what you do, where you do it, and how to reach you in that window, you have found the leak.

Reading about it is fine. Looking at yours is better. I'll build it first and send you a link — no card, no call.
